Scaring you into the voting booth
I noticed that this happened just before the 2004 election and again just before the 2006 election. Someone, (usually a democrat) tries to scare voters into thinking the United States will have to impose a draft for the military.
The argument is usually framed this way-
"..Bush has stretched this volunteer Army so thin, there will be no choice but to draft young men and women into service.."
Democrat- Charlie Rangel was one, calling for the draft before the 2006 election. This call was reported by many, which caused a few parents and young voters to fear the future. Rangel admitted that the purpose of the proposal was to scare people into ending the Iraq war. Voters- fearing that their children could be drafted into service, might actually vote for a democrat.
However this call for the draft, by the democrats, was a scare tactic that was never seriously debated in congress. Nor has the administration ever publicly announced a need for it.
Each year we, somehow- by the grace of patriotic Americans, meet our military needs. One cannot say enough about these men and women who enlist during a time of war.
As we approach the 2008 election, the "draft scare tactic" is being tried again. This time using the words of President Bush's new war adviser; Army Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute.
On National Pubic Radio, Lute said:
"..Today, the current means of the all-volunteer force is serving us exceptionally well…"
Many people who want to scare Americans into voting democratic are NOT reporting that sentence. Lt. Gen. Lute believes the US Force is working "exceptionally well."
What is being reported, by the likes of "The Daily Kos" and "The Huffer Post" is this statement- spoken by Lute:
(Speaking about the draft)-
"I think it makes sense to certainly consider it, all Things Considered."
"And I can tell you, this has always been an option on the table. But ultimately, this is a policy matter between meeting the demands for the nation's security by one means or another.."
Of course one must consider the draft..
President Nixon ended the practice of drafting young men into service. However, America holds a national registration of young men in case of emergency.
The draft has always been "on the table" in America. Even during peacetime. (That is why we demand that young men register with Selective Service when they turn 18.)
Lt. Gen. Lute isn't offering anything out of the ordinary or out of context here. He is simply reminding people that in a time of emergency, the draft can be implemented. (Which has always been the case- Yes, even during President Clinton and the Kosovo War.)
President Clinton didn't have to resurrect the draft and neither will President Bush.
The current administration has never suggested that a draft is needed at present time. No republican candidate running for office has even hinted of a possibility of reinstating the draft.
Why..??
Because it has been a conservative belief for thirty years that service to ones country should be a choice. This is the pinnacle of a free society. The freedom to hate or to love your country. The freedom to choose to fight for that freedom.
But there are those on the left who want to take Lute's statement and spin it to mean President Bush (is) or (should) call for the draft.
The Daily Kos, being one of the "culprits of fear", had this to say-
"…This war retains its final shreds
(????) of support only because the administration has required zero sacrifice from the American people. The blood is being shed by others.." "…There's only so much that war supporters are willing to do in their might and heroic struggle against Islamofacism. For example, they're willing to endlessly talk macho. But they're not willing to, you know, actually wear combat boots…"Hey Kos,
I will make a bet with you..
Whatever amount of cash you are willing to lose. You name the amount. Thousands?? Millions??
How many US military personal will say they are liberal?
How many US military personal will say they are conservative?
You want to take that bet, Kos??
(I do not believe he will take that bet.)
Because he knows conservatives ARE lacing up the boots and serving.
Far more military personal will admit to being conservative than would admit to being a liberal. Here is what conservatives ARE NOT doing.
We are not condemning the US military and its contractors for electrical power shortages in Baghdad, as some liberal bloggers do.
We would never call military contractors who were killed by terrorists- "Un-important.." as Kos basically said.
We conservatives are NOT using the misfortunes of war and "body counts" for political gain.
That is why most US soldiers WOULD NOT admit to being liberal. Because you assholes keep putting them down.
And we do not condemn liberals or progressives who do not choose to enlist in the military.
Actually, I do not believe I have ever put anyone down for NOT supporting this war on terrorism. If someone insults me, I will sometimes shame him or her back. But I have never attacked anyone, who hasn't attacked me first, for not supporting this war. I mostly argue my point that the watchful eye MUST be kept on radical Islam.
I believe we have stopped, or at least- postponed a World War 3 by intervening on radical Islam. Something that was missed during the rise of Hitler.
I believe every person who is fighting in The Middle East is doing a vital job securing America and her interests.
Is that so wrong, Kos?
That is why I cannot talk badly about how the military is providing security in Baghdad. That is why I could never call the people building a hospital in Baghdad "Crooks" because the price tag is high.
I'm not wired that way.
I cannot "say anything" just to get a democrat into the White House.
See, God gave me the intelligence to know that President Bush isn't running the wire that provides electrical power in Baghdad. It is people like you and I running that electrical wire in Baghdad. And the enemy is shooting them at them.
President Bush isn't holding a gun, trying to secure the streets of Baghdad. It is people like you and I who are trying to secure these streets. And they are doing a great job.
When you condemn the operations of this war, you think you are condemning President Bush's war plan. However, you are also insulting hundreds of thousands of Americans who are doing the best they can with what they have.
(And they do not have your support) But they do have mine.

President Bush wanted to remove Saddam from power in Iraq. However, it was the American congress who gave him the authority to do so.
This is NOT "Bush's War." This is an American War.
If I were a liberal, I would feel cheated by the 2001 congress. For I elected these people to represent me and they didn't. You can blame President Bush if you want to. (If that makes you feel better.) But don't you pay congress to be the counter-weight to the president?
Your congress has told you- "Oh boy, my bad… I didn't really mean to vote for war in Iraq. I didn't know all the facts. Bush cheated me. I was ignorant.." "Bush lied, people died.."
Some of these democrats are now asking you liberals to vote for them to become president. I ask you- "Did they really do their job in congress?"
Or is it enough for you to stick to the lemmings mentality that- "..Bush lied and tricked my candidate into voting for war.." What happens when Kim Jung Il lies? What happens when Putin lies? Will your candidate always be fooled?
It must be tough to be a liberal. You hate President Bush and you spend your time filling up blogs with stories of "so called" criminal acts by this president. Criminal acts that never pan out in the court of law because they were based on hearsay. The democrats have let you down. Progressives have no viable candidate. What can a liberal do..??
There is good news..
The UN has voted to send more aid, help and guidance into Iraq. This is good news NOT because the UN has been exceptionally successful. It is good news because the UN has felt for years that Iraq was too dangerous to give help. So this vote from the UN means they feel safer in Iraq.
Things may be getting better. And that is good news for all of America.
It is good news for me because I do not want radical Islam to feel they beat America on the battlefield with rocks and car bombs.
It is good news for democrats because now they do not have to run away from Iraq.

A nation that hasn't won a war since 1945 might think about promoting peace.
The people can see cheap energy and easy credit fading away. How can they afford $6 per gallon to heat their SUV's in winter? It can get very cold after the bank foreclosure takes the home away.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with not supporting Bush but being proud of the troops and the job they have done. Running away from Iraq AR??!! LOL. That's funny. I mean seriously, where is his game plan here and how long do you think this should go on for? We need to pull out of this war VERY, VERY SOON, have tighter securityon our side, and be fiscally conservative about what we've spent on this war before our country goes bankrupt!!!!!!
Bush has a Napoleon complex; he's a simple little man who needs to have his ego boosted by extending this war. Frankly, I can't wait until he's gone and the war is over, However, I am extremely proud to be a Gay American and support the hard work our troops have done so fu Joe Republican!!!
