My first reaction when I heard this story was:
"Well, piss on them if they feel this way. Those ungrateful bastards. American soldiers are dying so that these idiots can gather in the streets and chant- Death to America."
Here is the story..
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Hundreds of thousands of Shiites chanting "Death to Israel" and "Death to America" marched through the streets of Baghdad's biggest Shiite district Friday in a massive show of support for Hezbollah in its battle against Israel.It took me a bit to take the emotion out of this situation. (I had heard this story on the CNN satellite radio and they were almost gloating as they reported it.)
Then..
I remembered I felt the same way a while back when hundreds of thousands of AMERICANS came out in an anti-war protest. They yelled out: "America is the terrorist." They had signs that read: "Bush is Hitler" and "No blood for oil."
And these were Americans...
This is what a democracy is all about. People can vocalize against the powers that be without fear of repercussion. Could you imagine 5 years ago, Iraqi people lining the streets- chanting: "Death to Saddam." They would be dead.
I am convinced. The Iraqi people are not stupid. They are not a bunch of sheep following a ruler. If given a choice, the Iraqi people would rather be governed by their friends and neighbors then be ruled by a repressive dictator.
Iraqi people are getting a taste of freedom. I had an argument with Dnadna on this subject. America is not in Afghanistan and Iraq to place American laws into these countries. We are not there to put our leaders in place, (or steal the oil.) The Iraqi's will pick the leaders and run the country the way they see fit. (And we may not like the government they pick.)
Seven years after Hitler's death, America still had a large force in Germany. (We still have troops in Germany today.) Things looked very gloomy for Germany. The German people didn't care much for the American soldiers. Many didn't believe the Holocaust was real. American troops were viewed as the enemy.
Thumbs down to the American government for trying to cover this story up. When first reported, the US was trying to say that the Shiites were supporting Lebanon. No, it was very clear. They are supporting Hezbollah.
I must give credit where credit is due. The Hezbollah's are winning the public relations aspect of this war. They could never beat Israel on the battlefield. Think about it.. Hezbollah started this war. One stupid- violent act of killing and capturing Israeli soldiers. The Hezbo's knew Israel would retaliate. You could argue that all Lebanese deaths are Hezbollah's fault for starting a war in which they could never win. It is Hezbollah's fault for not removing the civilian population out of a war zone.
When the American World Trade Towers were attacked. Our first reaction wasn't to bomb some country, our first reaction was to rescue the survivors and get them to safety.
This is what Hezbollah should have done. Right from the beginning. Save the women and children. Get them out of harms way. Not rush into neighborhoods and start firing rockets. "Get the freaking women and children out first."
Israel is targeting any place that rockets have been fired out of. The Canadian reporter who was stationed at the UN building stated Helzbollah had been firing rockets from the UN building. Israel took out the building.
I am convinced Hezbollah is "Riding Dirty." I believe they are staging women and children in certain buildings. Hezbollah fires rockets from this area and then they have their camera's ready to take pictures of the dead. They shout out: "See.. see how evil Israel is." When in fact it was Hezbollah who started this conflict.
Top-notch spin coming from the Hez-balls. But, it will not last for long. The people of the world will see the truth. Once Muslims enjoy freedom, they will not want to be ruled by a dictator. They will enjoy freedom of speech. (Like the Iraqi's are now displaying.) Women will not have to worry if the wind blows their dress open. They will not be jailed or beaten. Or have Their heads cut off for cheating on their husband.
For those who say Israel and America are creating more terrorists in what we are doing. I say prove it. Israel has been fighting terrorists for as long as they have been a state. Israel has been fighting terrorists for longer then many of us have been alive. To this day, Israel is still more powerful then the terrorists who attack her.
I believe America is on the right track. We spent 3 decades hoping terrorism would go away.
It didn't.

We tried to catch a few terrorists and jail them. (Clinton-first WTT attack- 1993)
We tried to run from terrorists again (Clinton-Mogadishu)
We tried precision bombing again. (Clinton- Iraq- bombs an aspirin factory 1998.)
We Americans tried to ignore terrorism. (Clinton-Bombing of the USS Cole. The two American Embassies in Africa.)

For three decades we have tried all possible means. Terrorism is not going to go away.
I know this to be a fact. It is a fact because during this three-decade period, America has had Democratic leadership and republican leadership. These leaders have tried whatever method they felt would work.
It hasn't.
We swing back and forth. Between liberal and conservative leaders looking for an answer. For three decades the answer alludes us.
George Bush is not the brightest bulb in the box. (Insert rude comment here.) But, for the first time in three decades, we are taking the fight to the terrorists. We are making terrorists defend lands that they say they love.
Maybe terrorists need to see the horrors of war? They must want peace more then they want war.
Or this will never end.

That is a very nice thing to say.
Pictures really change peoples opinion. During WWII, much of the stuff people saw back home was pro-American. Even when we were losing, news reels showed great victory taking place.
Today, we are treated to video of be-headings, body counts, everything.
I'm not saying one way is better then the other. People have a right to know. But we also have to win the war.
The old saying goes something like this... there's a ponit where friendship ceases and chickenshit freezes.
Are they going to do what it takes to dramaticly lower the price of our gas ... or do we make glass.

-I have a real hard time swallowing the "evilness" of that statement especially since the Hezbollah is the tribal ministry for the Shiite tribe providing orphanges, schools and non profit banking instituitions. Perhaps that is why I have yet to see a dead militant in any pictures of Lebanese killed by Israel, my personal feeling is that Israel seeks to punish the civilian population that is why they destroy infrastructure, cut-off roads and bomb UN outposts.

Revolution is a proven method of rebellion. Terrorism is an act to terrorize innocent people by killing them to make others afraid. I have no problem with a revolution. Terrorism is barbaric. Civilized nations have criminal acts that are barbaric, but they usually only pertain to a small group of criminals. A civilized government's police force can handle the situation.
The American LAPD cannot fly to Lebanon and arrest Hezbollah for the 1983 killings of 250 US soldiers. "Do you understand that.??"
If you could prove to me Hezbollah or Hamas are a revolutionary army, that they mean no harm to their neighbors. They just want to over-throw their governments. I might understand. Especially if I too, do not care for the government that is to be over-thrown.
But then I read stories of former PLO terrorist- Walid Shoebat. He describes how he was raised. He was taught (in government schools) that Jews were pigs. Hogs. They are to be killed. It is the only way to have peace. Allah wishes the Jews to be killed. Walid did believe that if he could kill enough Jews, he would have 72 palaces waiting for him. In those 72 palaces would be 72 beds. On those 72 beds would be 72 virgins.
This is no way to raise a child. This is brain washing. They are raising killing machines. Not children who can think for themselves. (Some do think for themselves and they run like hell from the Middle East.) Why you would want to support these killers is beyond me.
How can all Jews be hogs to be butchered..?? Being educated, I understand that all Arabs are not terrorists. But terrorists believe all Jews should be killed.
Now, lets talk about this "special" piece of land called Israel..
Palestinians held this land before Israel became a state. Palestinians were pushed out of the region by a multi-national force. Correct..??
Who held this land before the Palestinians..?? Christians held this land for a while. Muslims fought and took over Jerusalem in the 1100AD. The Romans held Jerusalem, I believe in the 200AD. And, of course, Jewish people held that land too.

"Shades of gray" is a polite way of saying "indecision." In blue collar terms, it means you cannot make up your mind on most topics. Leaders cannot have indecision. They must make decisions all the time and lead.
I went through the education system. I know all about the "put yourself in the other guys shoes" exorcise. What professors forget to tell you is you have to put YOUR shoes back on. Your example is wrong. If I was English. If I still lived in England. Then I may believe the patriots of the colonies were terrorists. But I'm not English. I'm American.
The same is true about the Hezbo's that you now admit to defend. If I was a Hez-baller, then I guess I would consider that firing rockets into Israel with no aim on where they will come down or who they kill. Then I guess I would think that is a righteous thing.

The only way to stop terrorism is to stop meddling in the middle east. Close the military bases, stop worrying about the oil because it's all going to be gone soon enough anyway. If we have human rights concerns in the region lets address that through international diplomacy / peacekeeping. Do we really have to be the world police here? I still think we should go after those responsible for 9/11, but I think Bin Laden hasn't even been persued lately.
During the bombing of Lebanon, the reactions that I saw from the Lebanese, especially the younger people, was that they wish they could join up with Hezbolla. You think any of them will sympathize with Israel? Of course Israel is creating terrorists. So is the United States in Iraq. You're right that past methods of dealing with terrorism didn't work, but what is happening now definetly is not working.
We need some new ways of thinking about this problem... which is why I suspect there is going to be some major housecleaning in the elections this year.

(You did not read my article on "Radical Islam-The beginning.") Of course I do not hate all Arabs. I preach, over and over, the importance of being prepared if Radical Islam tries to do to America, what it is currently doing to Israel.
Education is the only way to stop the violence. As long as young Muslims are taught to hate the Jews and The West, you will have this.
